Marine Toys for Tots Ensures Every Child Experiences the Magic of Christmas

(NewsUSA) - As the holiday season approaches, the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is dedicated to ensuring that children in need have gifts to open on Christmas morning. This year’s campaign is especially critical, as many families across the Nation continue to face economic challenges and distress.

“The holidays should be a time of joy, but for many families, they are filled with uncertainty and difficult financial decisions,” said LtGen James B. Laster, USMC (Retired), CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “Every day we hear from parents who, despite their best efforts, can’t afford to provide gifts for their children. With your help, we can make sure every child receives the toys to treasure, and the gift of hope this Christmastime.”

The impact of the Toys for Tots Program is exemplified by stories like that of Heidi, a single mother of three, who faced the tough decision of prioritizing essential bills over holiday gifts. After praying for a sign, she was surprised when volunteers from Toys for Tots arrived at her door, bringing a bike, a tricycle, and crafts for her children.

In the years since that turning point, Heidi has moved forward in life, eventually donating to her local Toys for Tots chapter and later becoming its Coordinator. “I know firsthand how life-changing these toys can be, letting a child know they are not forgotten” she reflected.

The Toys for Tots Program relies on the generosity of individuals, families, organizations, and businesses to fulfill its mission of providing joy to disadvantaged children. Each unwrapped toy collected is more than just a gift; it symbolizes hope and community support for children and families experiencing hardship.

In 2023, Toys for Tots distributed over 25 million toys, books, and other gifts to more than 10 million disadvantaged children. Our goal is to break that record this holiday season and ensure that at least 11 million underprivileged children can celebrate the magic of Christmas with hope and happiness.

LtGen Laster expresses gratitude for the support of communities across the country: “We are thankful for all who contribute to this mission and assist us in reaching children before Christmas Day. Every contribution positively impacts a child's life.”

Donate to Marine Toys for Tots on Giving TOYSday!

(NewsUSA) - As the holiday season approaches, people around the world unite in a Global Day of Giving—Giving Tuesday—on December 3rd to support the charitable causes they respect and admire. For the Marine Toys for Tots Program, this day is Giving TOYSday, and we want to ensure that every child across our Nation will have at least one gift to open on Christmas morning.

With the generosity of the American public, the Program has faithfully delivered 677 million toys, books, and other gifts to 301 million deserving children since its inception in 1947. We still need your help to deliver the same Christmas magic to even more disadvantaged families—who continue to face financial challenges due to inflation, joblessness, and other hardships. Sadly, the idea of providing their children with Christmas gifts is a distant hope rather than a reality.

“We are asking for support from the American public now more than ever,” said Lieutenant General Jim Laster, President & CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

“We encourage our dedicated supporters to make a donation to the Marine Toys for Tots Program in honor of Giving TOYSday,” LtGen Laster said.  “When you give to Toys for Tots, you provide hope for a brighter future through the gift of a new toy, book, or game to children who might otherwise go without on Christmas morning. Together, we can restore optimism and deliver Christmas miracles to children whose families are struggling financially.”

Giving TOYSday also serves as a reminder that generosity is not limited to material possession alone. Your kindness helps instill empathy, compassion, and responsibility in children and future generations, shaping them into more caring and socially conscious individuals.

Make this holiday season brighter for children in need! Visit toysfortots.org to donate on Giving TOYSday and spread hope, joy, and the magic of the season to those who need it most.

Tips for Travel with Toddlers and Babies

(NewsUSA) - The holidays are upon us, and many parents with babies and young children may approach holiday travel with trepidation. Whether you and your young family are traveling by car, bus, train, or plane, or a combination, keep these tips from KinderCare experts in mind to help your kids (and you) be happy travelers.

-Plan for car seat success. Any baby or toddler gets antsy in a car seat eventually, whether in a car, on a train or bus, or on a plane. Help keep the little passengers happy by dressing them in light layers to account for excess heat or air conditioning. Bring toys, games, and books, and if in a car, have another adult or older child ride in the back seat if possible. For babies and toddlers, who should be in rear-facing seats, a safe plastic mirror helps you and your little one keep an eye on each other while staying safe.

-Space out surprises. No matter what mode of travel, having a “travel fun kit” that includes small toys, paper and crayons, activity books, and devices with headphones gives you a range of activities to rotate through airport waits, holiday traffic backups, or delayed trains/buses.

-Keep eating easy. Hungry children are cranky children. Planes and trains have limited snack options for children, and kids get hungry in the car when you aren’t prepared to make a food stop. Stash non-perishable healthy treats such as trail mix, fruit leather, low-sugar granola bars, jerky, or edamame. Use spill-proof cups, reusable snack bags, and freezable bags. Travel snacks to avoid include squishy yogurt tubes or other squeeze pouches that might rupture in luggage or squirt across a hungry kid while they are strapped into an airplane seat. Even chocolate is at risk, a hot car and a sunny window can create a melty mess.

-Stay consistent when you can. Babies and young children thrive on routines. If possible, stay as close as you can to their regular schedules of meals, playtime, and naps. Traveling should be fun, but realistically it is stressful for parents. Your kids will pick up on that stress, so practice self-care as well.

Marine Toys for Tots Kicks Off Holiday Campaign

(NewsUSA) - As the holiday season arrives, Marine Toys for Tots stands ready to assist millions of children in need across the Nation—providing hope and joy through toys, books, and other gifts.

Last year, the Marine Toys for Tots Program achieved new records with its flagship campaign, delivering over 25 million toys, books, and games to more than 10 million disadvantaged children who otherwise would have gone without and felt forgotten.

This year’s Holiday Campaign kicked off on October 1st and continues through December 25th. During this time, U.S. Marines, local Coordinators, and dedicated volunteers will conduct more than 870 local toy collection and distribution campaigns in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Toys for Tots’ local chapters are actively engaging with local businesses, media, and individuals within their communities to collect new, unwrapped toys, books, and games. The donated items will be distributed to disadvantaged children in their local areas, allowing them to experience a happy and joyful holiday season.

Inflation and the skyrocketing cost of living continue to force many families to choose rent, food, and gas over toys and gifts for their children. Toys for Tots believes no child should be forgotten during the most magical time of year. Their mission is to put a smile on every child’s face and restore hope to our Nation’s most precious resource – our children.

“Saving Christmas is no small task,” said LtGen James B. Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, in a statement announcing this year’s campaign.

“Now, in our 77th season, we are asking our supporters to help us achieve another record-breaking year and deliver the magic of the holidays to every family seeking our assistance,” he said.

Everyone who supports the Toys for Tots mission is a ‘Secret Santa,’ whether by placing toys, books, or games in the iconic white collection boxes in their communities or through monetary contributions.

Navigating “Gramnesia” This Holiday Season

(NewsUSA) - “Gramnesia,” a popular portmanteau term coined from the words “grandparents” and “amnesia," is taking the internet by storm, including a recent mention in the HuffPost. The term describes unsolicited advice from grandparents and older generations about parenting today, given by those who seem to forget some of the more challenging parts of raising young children. Phrases such as “We never had to force you to eat your vegetables,” or "You never cried this much," are common examples of “Gramnesia.”

With the holiday season on the horizon, many millennial or Gen Z parents may feel anxiety or dread about unsolicited advice during more extended family visits. Here are a few helpful tips to keep in mind when navigating generational differences:

  1. Respecting everyone is essential. From the youngest child to the oldest individual present, it is crucial to maintain respect for all. Whether you’re feeding a child, helping them nap, or providing comfort, everyone wants to be treated respectfully. Try to pause before offering a rebuttal to unsolicited parenting advice. You have the option to respond to the “Gramnesia”-related comments right away, later in the day, or via phone or text after the visit concludes. Setting boundaries is completely acceptable; just ensure they are communicated respectfully and thoughtfully. The classic advice, “Treat others the way you want to be treated," applies here.
  2. Embrace the differences. The concept of “Gramnesia” could extend beyond mere forgetfulness and reflect more on the expectations shaped by different generations and cultures. Second generation immigrants, blended and same-sex families might experience different journeys compared to their family’s previous generations. However, in many multigenerational households, people find their place by embracing a variety of expectations, leading to mutual compromises. With a little flexibility, it’s possible to navigate the challenges together. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, it’s okay to gently remind everyone that this is your child, and you’re simply doing what feels right for them.
  3. Define the common goal. It’s okay to pose questions in return, asking what the advice-giver meant by the comment they made. New parents may feel judged, while grandparents may feel dismissed. Open dialogue is needed to find common ground and meet the child's needs. For instance, grandparents inquiring about rice cereal or formula may only be wanting to ensure the baby is well-fed, not criticizing the parent’s preference to exclusively breastfeed.
  4. Use expert points of view to help navigate the circumstances. Child psychology and brain science have advanced in recent decades. Older generations might not be familiar with today’s recommendations and may need a refresher on today’s research or methods.
  5. Children can sense the vibe of the room. If you’re tense and find the emotional temperature is rising, chances are your child can pick up on that feeling, and some children may respond with their own attention-grabbing behaviors. If you feel overwhelmed or overstimulated, lessen the impact of those feelings on your child by removing yourself from that room or area and taking a few deep breaths. Once you’ve managed your emotions, think about expressing your feelings regarding the comment. Use this chance to apply all the previous suggestions by establishing clear boundaries and ensuring that everyone is respected as you work towards a shared objective.

Help Marine Toys for Tots Deliver Hope to Children in Poverty

(NewsUSA) - Approximately 40% of children in the United States live at or below the poverty line, facing daily challenges and hardships. Their parents, grappling with the relentless impact of record-high inflation, struggle to provide even the most basic necessities. They simply don’t have the financial means to provide toys, books, or games for their children.

Marine Toys for Tots, traditionally known as the Nation’s flagship children’s Christmastime charity, has expanded its mission and now provides year-round joy, comfort, and hope to economically disadvantaged children across the Nation through the gift of a new toy, book or game.

“As part of our Program’s year-round mission, we continue to look for ways to provide comfort and emotional relief to children living in poverty,” says LtGen Jim Laster, CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

The need continues all year, not only during the holiday season. Throughout October, Marine Toys for Tots encourages supporters to contribute in honor of Child Poverty Day, which was recognized on October 17, and be part of a better, brighter chapter in the lives of economically disadvantaged children. This day serves as a reminder that every child deserves the chance to thrive, dream, and succeed.

“Today’s children are tomorrow’s leaders, and together we can provide hope for a brighter future and remind them that, no matter their circumstances, no doors are closed to them in life,” says LtGen Laster.

At a recent event in central Ohio, more than 220 children who attended a monthly food distribution with a local Toys for Tots partner were elated by the surprise of tables filled with toys, books, and games provided by Toys for Tots, thanks to the support of friends like you.

Not only does your gift provide an immediate boost to the quality of life for these children; you show them that they matter, and that there is hope for a brighter future.

Tips for Having Meaningful Conversations with Your Kids

(NewsUSA) - As children return to school, families can employ various strategies to turn mundane questions such as, "How was your day?" into meaningful conversations. These tips can help children open up, easing any jitters or anxieties they may be feeling.

"You don’t have to set aside a specific time in your day to have impactful discussions with your child,” said Ariel Bronson, KinderCare Inclusion Services Advisor. “You can take advantage of small moments in your everyday schedule to build on your relationship with your child, leading to deeper conversations and connection over time.”

  1. Set the scene and get involved. Take time during your family's daily routine to spark conversations with your child, whether during a commute, mealtime, bath time or an afternoon walk. Conversations in trusted, familiar environments will help your child feel more at ease and more willing to open up to you.
  2. Leave questions open-ended and use patience. Allow your children to lead the conversation and use their answers to build on it. Listen patiently instead of jumping into problem-solving. The goal is to build a conversation around connection rather than control. The more you learn about your child’s day and are involved in their schedules, the more topics you have to discuss.
  3. Use focused prompts to keep conversations going. If your discussions still lead to dead ends, try focusing on a specific topic. What are your child’s interests? For example, you could use art class or a sporting practice as a thought starter. “What did you do at [insert activity] today? This will help spark a memory for your child, allowing you to build on their response. You can also encourage your child to reflect on their day. “What was something you learned, liked, saw or noticed today?” Help guide your child through each topic.
  4. Encourage your child to connect with their emotions. Deepen your conversation by asking questions like, “What was something unexpected that happened today? When did you feel excited? How were you brave?” Do the same for questions related to their peers, such as, “When did you notice a classmate being kind today?” This will allow your child to recognize and understand how feelings impact us.
  5. Explore non-verbal conversations. If your child doesn’t want to talk or has limited speech capabilities, try starting a family journal and leave prompts for your child to write about and a place for them to ask you questions. This tactic is also helpful when navigating more challenging topics. For younger children, you could have them draw what they felt during the day or something that they enjoyed as a way to share.

Marine Toys for Tots' Christmas in July Campaign Delivers Hope to Children in Need

(NewsUSA) - Marine Toys for Tots, best known as the Nation's premier children's Christmastime charity, doesn't wait until the holiday season to support children in need. Toys for Tots has evolved into a year-round force for good, and 2024 marks its fourth annual Christmas in July initiative to bring joy, magic, and hope to underprivileged children across the United States.

"Needs aren't seasonal, and neither is Toys for Tots," says LtGen Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.  "With the rising cost of living and other economic challenges, parents are finding it increasingly difficult to pay bills and put food on their family's table.  Buying toys, books, or games for their children seems completely out of reach," he emphasized. "With the support from our generous donors, we can make sure every child's future is as bright as possible – and deliver the magic of the holiday season in July."

As in previous years, Toys for Tots partners with local nonprofits across the country to deliver hope and emotional support to struggling families who need it the most. Toys for Tots' year-round initiatives, which include Christmas in July and ongoing programs to support children's literacy and children in Foster Care, have become especially valuable as more families struggle with the impact of inflation and other challenging financial circumstances.

Amidst the stress of rising costs for everything from gas, groceries, and other basic necessities, Toys for Tots' year-round programs strive to provide a sense of normalcy and comfort to children in need, with hope for brighter days ahead.

"With every gift that is given, our generous supporters show how much they care about children who face poverty every day of the year. Santa's boots are big ones to fill, but if anyone's up to the task, it is our faithful donors," LtGen Laster adds.

The generosity of the American public makes a significant difference to underserved communities, and especially to children. Every contribution made is a gift of hope to a child in need – and a reminder of a brighter tomorrow.

Celebrate Christmas in July and be part of Toys for Tots' mission as a year-round force for good!

Toys for Tots Supports Children for a Summer of Fun and Learning

(NewsUSA) - Most children in the United States look forward to their summer break from school as a chance to have fun with friends, spend time with family, and have new adventures and experiences that are so crucial to stimulate and nurture young and inquisitive minds.

However, far too many disadvantaged children across the Nation experience summer vacation as a period of loneliness and isolation, with little support and few resources or opportunities for physical and mental stimulation.

According to the National Institutes of Health, school holidays can be especially stressful periods for children from low-income families, with lack of appropriate child care, limited access to enrichment activities, and food insecurity. These challenges can cause children’s physical and emotional health, as well as academic progress from the previous school year, to stagnate or decline.

Marine Toys for Tots, the Nation's flagship children’s Christmastime charity, has evolved into a year-round force for good, and the organization’s new initiative seeks to provide support for children in need over the summer months.

“We want to help bridge the summer learning-loss gap that children in underserved communities may face. That is why we have enlisted the help from our distribution partners to provide educational toys, books, games, and other gifts through our spring and summertime initiative, ‘School Is Out – Play Is In’ to at-risk children across the country,” says LtGen Jim Laster, USMC (Retired), President & CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

“Needs aren’t seasonal, and neither is Toys for Tots,” says LtGen Laster. “With the rising cost of living and other economic challenges, parents are finding it increasingly difficult to pay bills and put food on their family’s table.  Buying toys, books, or games for their children seems completely out of reach,” he adds. “With the support from our generous donors, we can make sure every child’s summer is filled with opportunities for fun and continued learning.”

The Program’s year-round distributions reassure families who face adversity and exceptional circumstances that Marine Toys for Tots is committed to delivering messages of hope, restoring and building self-esteem, and inspiring youngsters to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. Every contribution will ensure that our Nation’s most vulnerable children have the educational tools they need to thrive this summer and beyond.
